It’s Only a Logo

photo (1)When was the last time you read something the undersold the importance of branding?

I’ve heard people complain that we have placed too much importance on it, particularly within ministry circles. But in terms of someone getting the book deal or posting something if they cover branding/marketing it goes in the “important” column.

And I would agree to a point.

We are in the branding process for Movement Church and have reached a conclusion on a logo. I’m not going to lie and say I’m not excited because I am. But it is only a logo.

Us pastors like to play this game of comparison that is about as much fun as root canal but it hasn’t stopped us yet. We talk about the size of our church, how many groups we have, what networks we belong to, or whatever we use as the measuring stick of the day.

Planters in the pre-launch stage like yours truly, don’t have worship services so we talk about our fundraising, leaders on our Launch Team, or our brand.


Now I’m as guilty as anyone because I can look at that list and know I have committed time and effort to crafting each. And I haven’t come across any new churches that start their name with “First”.

Branding is important but you can have the best logo and the most captivating style and suck as a church. It’s only a logo, don’t worry so much about what your brand is communicating that you don’t communicate those values to your community.
