John Piper Interviews Rick Warren

Below is an interview of Rick Warren conducted by John Piper. In many ways these two pastors and leading voices in the American church are in different camps.

Piper is one of the most recognizable in the Reformed movement, which has gained quite a bit of notoriety as of late. He also (in)famously tweeted “Farewell Rob Bell” before Love Wins was published.

Warren is the best known pastor in America. His book Purpose Driven Life has sold more copies than any other book, besides the Bible. He is the face of the megachurch movement and the seeker sensitive church model.

To be honest both have done things that have left a bad taste in my mouth, but in watching the interview you can not argue with the faith, passion and intelligence of either man. In the spirit of full disclosure I haven’t read much of what either man has written.

The interview concerns doctrine, something Piper wears on his sleeve and something Warren has been accused of dodging. The interview is also extremely lengthy, but even viewing a portion is worth your time. What is discussed is popular fodder for bloggers and critics, how it is discussed is a good reminder that this isn’t just about abstract ideas but real people who are desperately trying to live in response to Jesus.
